Coming soon: Corners of The Wheel

Cover of Corners of The Wheel, a memoir by James Epperson: his portrait with the Wolf and the Raven inside a four-direction wheel

A memoir by James Epperson about the circle of life and the tangents along the way, from childhood through military service and the turns that followed. More to come.

Li₈Au data published; phonons confirm a stable arrangement

The second-lowest Li₈Au arrangement is dynamically stable: every vibration (phonon) frequency is real. The check of the lowest arrangement is running now. All of our Li–Au calculations are now openly published in the NOMAD materials database (doi:10.17172/nomad.d1qa-fvm0), alongside the Zenodo preprint (doi:10.5281/zenodo.23569302). We have also submitted an abstract for an oral presentation of this work at the APS Global Physics Summit 2027.

Li₈Au: all six orderings computed

All six ways of placing gold in Li₈Au without two gold atoms touching have now been calculated with identical settings. Two new monoclinic arrangements are the lowest in energy, and four arrangements lie within 2.3 meV per atom of each other, so at room temperature the gold atoms are likely disordered. The phase now sits about 6.6 meV per atom above the Li–Au convex hull, closer to stable than before, and would form about 14 mV below the lithium potential, within the range reached during lithium plating.

Reading cells: we caught our own result being fooled

Our cell-shape study looked very strong on 43,684 nuclei, until one more check showed that most of the signal came from differences between microscope slides, not from the cells themselves. Measured fairly, against each nucleus’s own neighbours, the signal is small, with uneven chromatin the clearest sign. We updated the Frontiers page to say so.

Next: data with cancer and healthy cells on the same slides

New research direction: reading cells by their shape

We began applying mathematics from knot theory (total curvature, bending energy) to the outlines of cell nuclei, as a step toward helping detect cancer. The method and first results are on the Frontiers page.
